Hi, I was wondering where some of you VA folk like to collect and/or just sample fish near to the Alexandria/Arlington area?

There are a couple of little streams that crisscross Telegraph road between Van Dorn and 495 that I've been meaning to poke around in and haven't. I think one is Dogue Creek (runs into Huntley Meadows) and the other is part of Cameron Run (or so Google maps tells me). I've seen a bunch of shinners, sunfish and small darters on the part of the creek that runs into and through Huntley Meadows, but never caught anything from there since it's a protected area.

You may run into a few snakeheads there are Dogue Creek. Is there anything in particular that you will be looking for or just seeing what's out there?

Gosh, I live less than a mile from Telegraph and 495....I am in Huntington Gateway @ Rt. 1 and Huntington Ave.

I ride my bike to work in the city several times a week on the Mt. Vernon trail but have never really seen an area that would make a good "kick" site. I may have to wander around the telegraph road area some more.

Is there anything in particular that you will be looking for or just seeing what's out there?

Well, a little of both I guess :smile2:

I am fortunate enough to work at a job where sampling macroinvertebrates is part of the job duties, so I constantly see different species along Rock Creek tribs and Anacostia tribs...but obviously nothing I could use in my own tank.

I would like to see what is around here and also try to find a few minnows or mummichogs...maybe a darter.

Actually, have you guys sampled in any of those areas around Telegraph? I may try to see if I can get my little honda in one of those apt. parking lots and just look around a bit. I certainly don't want to upset anyone or anything like that.

It looks like the little trib near "huntington park" may work...a little more toward telegraph/495 intersection.

Small world! I live across the street at Riverside.

Any of the small creeks in the area have tessellated darters, pumpkinseeds, shiners, dace, etc....loads of my fish have come out of Cameron Run.

Let me know if you want to get together and do some seineing.

Wow man, you are super-close!

Where do you access the water if you don't mind me asking you your spots? I was riding the metro over the stream and it looks incredibly silty and not too inviting as a kick site.

I need to get one of those dip nets at sports authority first I think....that should work well for darters.

I left a lot of my stuff back in Southern Missouri before I moved here.....darn!

Thank you for the response, it is encouraging ;) .

Sincerely,

BTW - yes, I would love to seine with another fish nut. I will PM you my information.

Hey, you know the bike trail right in front of Hampton Inn over there (the one that follows Rt. 1 over into old town and is not officially open yet... ;) )? It looks like a small stream feeds into a larger one, then to the Potomac. I don't know if the "small" stream area is routed underground or if it is "kickable".....? It looks like it is right by that hotel.

By kickable, do you mean rocky and kinda shallow? You might want to look at the stream that crosses Telegraph between Old Telgraph and Wilton and that goes through Jefferson Manor Park.

I'd be interested in going out any time so just let me know.

Yeah, I see where you are indicating on the map. Do you typically park at the Jefferson Manor parking lot and walk over? It looks like there would be quite a bit of access along there.

I definitely need to get a net first....but yeah, I would love to go! If I can get a net tonight I will send you a PM later with my email and such.

I haven't actually been since I'm still a n00b, but my bus runs that strip of Telegraph every day and I've been planning to hit it for months. Probably parking at the park would be easiest since I know that at least the part down by Wilton has a giant fence running on the one side before it becomes part of someone's backyard and I'm not sure about the access from Old Telegraph. Although, there has to be an easy way to get in that section because there were some tents pitched by the overpass for a couple of weeks this winter.

Oh, and if I don't get back to your pm quickly, it's because my email notifcations from this board have been really spotty about getting through. Sometimes I get them and sometimes I don't.
