Hi, I just saw a Tesselated (or what I believe to be a tesselated) swimming near my apartment in a fairly sedimented and trash-ridden urban stream. Are these guys known to be quite hardy?

Just curious ;)

I'm not at all familiar with tessellated darters, but I know that both orangethroats and johnnies can both live in moderately to heavily polluted streams around here. It wouldn't be far-fetched to assume tessellateds could too.

Perhaps someone with more direct experience could weigh in here.

Yes, tesselated is usually the ONLY darters i see in urban streams in NC Atlantic slope river basins.
Because it sticks eggs to the underside of a rock and fans them, it can survive in creeks where fine silt has clogged up the gravel, so gravel-spawning darters cannot live. (Fantail and johnny are also fairly urban tolerant for the same reason)

Thank you, I assumed this had to be the case but wanted to get some opinions first.

Road signs, lawnmowers, and newspaper vending machines with the coin box ripped open also make good spawning sites for tessies and johnnys.
In some urban streams these are much easier to find than rocks.

Or dead dogs, here in the South.
