I am sort of a new comer when it comes to darters. i have had them in the past before (Rainbows, Greensides, iowa, johnny, and some others) but i never really varied their diet to much. i fed them some FD bloodworms and Frozen ones as well. i even designed a way to get freezedried tubiflex worms to the bottem (which they really liked). i was wondering if there was some live food that was easy to care for and they liked it. i have never really had any food cultures so im new to that to. I have had a lot of success with the ways i used on other fish too like bluegill, longears, warmouth, dace, chubs, shiners, and even sculpins. i just want to mix up their diet in a way that is easy and affordable. if you could help me out that would be great. For a setup i have 150g long tank (big i know but more darters for me :) ).

Also i would like to know more breeding habbits of the darters such as temp, water quality and such. i have plenty of places for fry to go i just need to know how to set the mood lol :)

For food, try small earthworms or cut-up larger worms (but not too thick around). I'll leave others to talk about breeding darters.

This a good time of year to rear water fleas and mosquito larvae in tanks or buckets outside. Latter in shade and former in full to partial sun (larger tank more sun).

How do you do that? I'd like to know.

schambers:

i took a size 18 hook and tied it to some fishing line. i put a weight behind the hook to sink it down. pretty simple really, the hook is to big to hurt the fish and they just peck off it while they eat. its actually really cool to see 6 or 7 eating off of it :) . i have to say though not all of them ate it. so you may have to train a bit

I give mine scuds on occasion, the little black shrimplike critters that can be found in fast moving streams. The darters really have a field day chasing them down.
