I know a few of the other New England guys have been searching for tessellated.
Just a heads up: I observed numerous good sized darter fry in the mainstem Merrimack River just south Of Manchester.
I didn't have a NH license [was not after fish], nor nets but did manage to cup one in my hands long enough to see the "W" marks down the side. Not that it could have been anything else given location and habitat.
For some reason tessellated are rare or absent in northeastern ma with only a few reported from the Merrimack drainage.
I'm not sure how well known they are in eastern NH but my preliminary search online seems to indicate few records.
There sure were lots of little guys all along the sandy shore, under sticks, flat rocks and clumps of plants. I never saw adults but I couldn't see into the water beyond a few feet from shore.
I don't know if they're considered rare but there seemed to be lots. Seems like a very difficult, large river to find darters in a survey. They probably mostly go unreported.
I'd like to put a seine downstream of some of the deadfalls and kick up the sediment. I bet there are some big honkin darters living in that river that no one has ever seen!
Some of you guys looking for darters oughta get over there and check it out!

Tessellateds are rated as S4, Apparently Secure, in both MA and NH so I think you can collect them in good conscience.

Correct.
I suspect there are alot more darters there then people think.
It's a big river with several high profile game species which get the attention.

I'm gonna do some pokin around below the Ma line on the 'Mack. Actually, I'm doing that anyway looking for old indian sites.
