Project Coordinator
Position Description

Position Description: The Sunday Creek Watershed Coordinator is a leadership position requiring the ability to manage volunteers and staff and to collaborate with multiple partners to achieve water quality goals in Sunday Creek as stated in the Sunday Creek Watershed Management Plan. The Coordinator must be able to understand and manage watershed reclamation projects as well as foster community partnerships and environmental education initiatives. The Coordinator must be able to work independently on technical reports and grants, and lead a team to achieve specific watershed outcomes. This fast paced and multi-faceted job requires an ability to foster partnerships and write and implement results-oriented plans.

Sunday Creek Watershed Group is housed within, and is a partner to, Rural Action, a regional sustainable development organization working on restoration, agriculture, forestry, energy, and environmental education. Rural Action brings together the region’s citizens to develop long term sustainable solutions for Appalachian Ohio’s communities.

The Sunday Creek Watershed Coordinator will be responsible for implementing watershed plans, directing education and outreach activities and managing the watershed office. The Watershed Coordinator is responsible for networking with federal, state and local agencies; educational institutions, non-profit organizations and citizens both within and outside the watershed.

Supervision: Mike Steinmaus, Director of Watersheds

Office Location: Sunday Creek Watershed Office, Glouster, Ohio

Duties and responsibilities include but are not limited to the following areas:

KNOWLEDGE OF WATERSHED RESOURCES
• Knowledge of Acid Mine Drainage issues (water chemistry, data collection, data entry and interpretation)
• Proficiency in GIS and GPS
• Implementation of the Watershed Management Plan and Watershed Coordinator Work Plan
• Implementation of the Acid Mine Drainage Abatement and Treatment Plan
• Evaluation of the watershed organization's progress toward meeting water quality objectives

GRANTWRITING AND FUNDRAISING
• Research grant funding sources, develop grants, complete all reports
• Participate in local donor events through Rural Action as requested
• Develop budgets and coordinate fundraising for all project and administrative costs

ENVIRONMENTAL EDUCATION
• Organize summer day camps
• Maintain programming at the Trimble Township Land Lab
• Participate as a collaborator with the Little Cities of the Forest Initiative
• Provide presentations to classrooms and educators as requested and as schedule allows

OUTREACH and COMMUNICATIONS
• Serve as the primary contact to the general public, media, agency personnel and funding sources
• Coordinate periodic public meetings, watershed tours and workshops
• Publish Sunday Creek’s newsletter and maintain the Sunday Creek website with current information
• Submit press releases to local media about Sunday Creek events
• Produce and disseminate informational and educational materials as needed
• Work with Rural Action to promote Rural Action activities and ensure Sunday Creek’s representation on Rural Action’s website and outgoing communications
• Develop projects for volunteer engagement
• Coordinate with Rural Action's Volunteer Programs

PARTNERSHIP DEVELOPMENT
• Coordinate partnerships with federal, state and local agencies; academic institutions; non-profit organizations and citizen groups
• Maintain partnerships though routine, professional contact with key personnel
• Be willing and available to build new partnerships on a local, regional and national level.

ADMINISTRATION and LEADERSHIP
• Using a coaching style of leadership, ensure the success and productivity of staff, interns, AmeriCorps members, and volunteers working on Sunday Creek projects
• Participate as a member of the Rural Action management team to collaborate on projects and find ways to promote sustainable development in Appalachian Ohio
• Manage the day to day administrative responsibilities of the watershed office (hire, supervise, train and evaluate office personnel)

Minimum Qualifications and Characteristics

Knowledge and Experience: BS in natural resources, environmental sciences or earth sciences with two or more years experience in a related field. Candidates with an Associates Degree and adequate experience will also be considered. Candidate must also have knowledge of water quality issues and a valid drivers license.

Personal Characteristics: Outgoing, well organized, strong communication skills (including writing and public speaking). Ability to work independently or in a team setting. Ability to work under deadline pressure and manage multiple tasks.

Technology and software: Skills with word processing, database management, presentation and spreadsheet skills (MS Word, Access, PowerPoint and Excel). Proficient with GIS software such as ArcGIS and GPS units. Able to calibrate, operate and maintain water quality equipment.

Communications: Strong writing, public presentation, and interpersonal communication skills (report writing, phone etiquette, internet capabilities).

Physical:
Ability to walk extended distances over rough terrain. Ability to carry up to 40 pounds of equipment.

Preferred Qualifications and Characteristics


Master of Science degree in natural resources, environmental sciences or earth sciences preferred. Knowledge of stream biology and habitat analysis a plus. Map development, data analysis and overlay creation using GIS/GPS data a plus. Strong analytical skills, ability to have a flexible schedule and a good sense of humor.
