I've been carbon-free for a while now. 30% water changes every 5-7 days.

When I used carbon the tanks were absolutely odor free. They still are, almost.

If I stick my nose right near the water I get a little bit of odor. Not bad, kind of like the streams these critters live in.

I'd like to add a small bag to the HOB filters for about a week every 3-4 months.

I'm tired of paying super high prices at fish stores so I contacted Culligan; $175 for one cubic foot of GAC. Not cheap, but better than at the LFS.

Anyone know of a better source for GAC?

I don't snort or sniff my water
and save all my activated carbon money;
No carbon for a dozen years.
80% water change every 3 weeks.

What's the cost benefit for GAC in filter media vs. X % (50, 75, 80) water changes every two weeks? City water isn't exactly cheap and not everyone has well water or access to water collection/storage.

Yes, I would like to see the results if someone does this study.

I would be interested in a study based on water for healthy fish,
not removing color from the water
and not removing smells that effect humans and not fish.
