how well does elodea do in gravel?

i just got rid of all my coontail because it can't even be rooted at all, and i want to get some elodea from the local pond (which had a sand/muck type bottom) and put it in my tank, which is just gravel.

any tips?

It won't be able to anchor itself very well in gravel; you'll need to weight it down. But it should thrive even with no soil, as it pulls most of its nutrients from the water column.

It likes to be planted in sand. It grows great guns in it, far better than gravel or mud.

Of course, it isn't a fair comparison. The stuff I have planted in sand is safe out of the way of marauding raccoons, while the stuff in the mud and the gravel is not. Still, "the books says" sand, and I believe the book.

Best wishes!

PS. I forgot to mention. The native elodea goes dormant. Even in an aquarium setting. I thought for sure I had some how managed to kill it, but came spring, there it was!
