Any body had any casualties yet?

I have two golden barbs (ornamental tropicals) that are both exhibiting round tumor like growths. On one fish, this round "ball" protrudes on the side abdominal wall. On the other fish, the "round ball" protrudes from the anus.

Do no harm is the motto, but I am considering sacrificing them in the name of science. So, before I lean toward justifiable homicide, are there any concrete ideas what might be the cause of our dilemma?
