ok so i have been looking for golden shiners the past month or 2. i know that i had found a location....so today i just wanted to try and net some common shiners to feed my american eels...well i saw a huge school of something that didnt look like sunfish nor bass...i thought trout but knew it was impossible. i hooked like a 7" on a bass lure... It was hugeeeeeeeee. i couldnt believe the size of this thing. nice reds as well. i did take 1 pic i will upload later (running to dinner with family now) i couldnt even wanna bring this thing home...i thought that it would eat all my darters and other dace...i am still stunned at the size of this thing....

yeah they were wayyyy to big for me to take..A shiner that big belongs on hook under a bobber.
Goldens make great captives but the big ones tend to bounce off the glass and get hurt.
I wouldn't collect golden shiners now however. They don't do well in hot weather.

Wow. That is a good looking fish. I want to give shiners a try yet someday. Smaller ones:)
A number of years ago I was collecting darters and other small fish when I noticed a school of fish I had never seen before. Half an hour of chasing them and trying to net one then ensued. I finally got one but it died within an hour in the pail. It was a hot day. I never knew what it was until joining the site, I am quite sure that it was a golden shiner. Never seen them there since. Too bad.
