I have been noticeing little difrences in Rainbow Darters. Such as the width of th blue band on the dorsil fin, amount of blue and red onthe fish, Aswell as the coloration of the head. The two populations i have sampled are verry close together
one ocureing in the main river of the drainage the other in a tributetary that is a spring feed creek. The rainbows in the main river are deeper aboat 1.5 feet/"nee deep 6.1 foot man". Is this comon place?

I would say that these slight variations are common. I have noticed several variations just within KY. I can point out a Rainbow from the Cumberland River drainage over one from the Kentucky River. I have also noticed differences in coloration due to size of the stream. Rainbows from small upland streams seem to have brighter colors.

I have no scientic evidence to this, just my observations.

There are some threads on the Forum with pictures of multiple individuals of several species of darter that show variation. That would be expected of any natural population, there's always variation, just like with people.

alright i was just wundering how comon this was. do you notice this in othere darters such as fantails, Iowa, Gilt or any others? Also have you ever seen a realy orange colored rainbow darter the fish that sparked my interest in darters was a deceased rainbow that had insane color orange and blue banding over its entire body the head was blue the fins glowed orange and blue. There are no orange throat darters here. Ever seen this in a rainbow?

Not that, but my current rainbow darter was almost unidentifiable at first because it was very dark, with reds, blues and almost deep purple. Now he's more typical.

This might not be a great thread to link but it does show many fish side by side from the same water on the same day.
