It depends on what you mean by viable. I do know they are not sterile contrary to what some may tell you. I also know they are more common in the wild than some people realize as I've seen them in a couple of reservoirs back when I was a biologist aid, and as a taxidermist I get them in now and then. A local biologist also confirms he runs into them on occasion. For some reason the largest crappies I mount are usually natural hybrids as this 21 inch fish. Hybrid vigor?
I know a hatchery that supplies them and would probably answer all your questions. Ask for biologist Bobby Glennon at Malone and Sons.

That hybrid crappie is a monster! Wow, definitely hybrid vigor.

We made a few thousand hybrids this spring. About 2,000 3" fingerlings are in the process of being trained to eat pellets for use in a nutritional study. The hybrid also appears to perform better than either parent in a culture setting, and yes, despite being fertile.

Good Lord that's a big crappie! Do you know the weight?
It's wasn't a very heavy robust fish and weighed only 3 1/4 pounds on my certified scale.
