I have debated ordering swamp darters from sachs before but one problem bothers me. I hear they only live one year in the wild. A short lifespan would make the purchase be not worth it.

Do they live longer in captivity?

While I haven't actually kept track of any swamp darters (I have gotten most of mine by saving them from the feeder shrimp tanks), I will say yes, they are hardy and most certainly are living longer than a year. I am not aware that any of our darters are actually that short lived in captivity... sure in the wild they may grow and spawn and dye in a year or two... but in a tank I have had lots of darters last for 3-5 years.

I've had one that got from a LFS ghost shrimp tank for about a year now. I was actually in the same store today and they had another one in the tank.

Pygmy sunfish often live only a year in the wild too, but 2 to 3 yrs is common in captivity. I'd expect swamp darters to live that long too. Ive had ones collected as adults live for at least a year, so they must have been at least 2. Of course you can try breeding them, then you wont feel so bad when the old ones die!
