What's the general consensus on test strips for ammonia, nitrite, and nitrate, alkalinity, hardness, etc. out there? How accurate are they and are they dependable?

As someone who tests my own tanks regularly and works at a pet store, and so tests customer's water also, if given the chance I always opt for a liquid test kit. I feel that for most aquarium hobbyists though, strips are convenient and while not necessarily very accurate, they will tell you if something is going wrong enough to be a danger to your animals. I usually keep a bottle of them in my car for testing water in the field if I feel I'm bringing home sensitive fish that may need to be accommodated for in regards to unusual water chemistry.
