I have also drilled holes in slate with a masonry bit and screwed the slate to driftwood, works well for the most part.

I have a thought.......replace the dowel with another piece of natural wood. It really doesn't have to be straight to hold it down, just snug. Its an opportunity to add an interesting branch :D/

what about just siliconing it to the bottom of the tank?

Sure, that would work. But you'd have to drain your tank, remove the gravel, and dry glass. Plus, you could never move the driftwood around or to a different tank.

what about just siliconing it to the bottom of the tank?

I did that once and I was very, very sorry a year or two later when I wanted to re-aquascape the tank. I'll never do it again.

seriously, just go outside, find an oak/maple/etc. branch with some unique/funky shape, figure it out (meaning the shape of the stick and how to wedge it in place), cut it, knock it in and walk away.
