Wow - a 500+ ft deep canyon down the middle of the river that effectively isolates diverging fish populations on either side. How would Dave Rosgen classify THAT geomorphologically? There's even a blind Teleogramma-like cichlid in the canyon.

There's an hour-long version of this on one of the cable stations, NatGeo or Discovery(?). The kayakers get bushwhacked by bandito rebels and some other hazards of research in the area, but they still come up with some amazing data. And there are lots of other fishy thangs, too. {Edit: this work makes our discussion of flow meters sound a little silly...]

I'll have to look into that, I wonder if they have it on DVD yet. This would be a really good way to introduce speciation, pop genetics and pop ecology.

And great point about the flow meter ROTFL!
