Is their any place with populations of mud sunfish where it would be legal to take them and not negatively impact their population? Looking at natureserve the new jersey population looked stable, but a quick search revealed the NJ fishing rules say they are protected. I want to obtain one of these cool looking sunfish, but i don't want to harm a population or break a law to do it.

They are legal to take in SC. They are not at all common though and difficult to collect where they are found. We typically catch 10 or so a season and send them off to breeders.
