Something, other than coloration of that fish is not right. It does not appear to be alive when photographed. I had some bluegill like that a couple years back that adopted the coloration as they died.

Seems alive to me. Fins move from shot to shot and have the look of a live fish. Beautiful fish but a real wonder it got that big. Seems odd though it obviously does happen.

I was thinking the same thing about the china rockfish.

It is a very rare ressessive genetic trait. You don't see many fish like these because they cannot escape predation. It is one of a group of genetic traits that can occur that changes the fishes appearance. This is very similar to the ressessive "longfin" trait in many fish species Luke oscars or danios.

Here's a list:

Albino: Lacking pigment.
Amelanistic: lacking melanin (black pigment).
Erythristic: Predominantly red morph.
Flavistic: Sepia-toned background color.
Leucistic: lacking or mostly lacking chromatophores. Not a true albino (ie: colored eyes).
Melanistic: dark or near black (some markings can still be visible).
Piebald: Having patches of white.
Polymorphic: Having a natural variation within a single species.
Xanthic: Predominantly yellow color morph.

Hope this helps.

Snookman,

Can this fish or one of its kin from the same pond be shown alive and in good health. Fish in photographs is very thin. Genetic basis for appearance must be proven in light of health status issues than can cause a similar appearance in coloration.

I've never heard of health issues causing this static of a color change. Here's a link to the thread on another forum where the guyshows another from the same lake on the same day: http://www.striperso...d.php?p=6702058
