is there anything visual that I would be able to use when I am at the river to pick up more females?
Nothing I am aware of other than finding them plump with eggs. Thin fish could be either non breeding males or females that have already spawned. If you want to get more females, I'd look for fat bellied plain looking ones. (Hmm there's gotta be a better way to phrase that last sentence.
