Today I spent the day fishing the Nith and Grand Rivers here in Southern Ontario and I saw these big chunky guys swimming around everywhere in the shallow areas of the Nith. They were fairly long with large scales and rusty-coloured tails. I don't know if they were common carp or redhorse. Are there any easy ways to identify them from above without catching one?

I never seen a redhorse but the pictures of them i have seen look alot like white suckers. If that is the case they should have a more smooth and streamlined body with smaller scales than carp.

Dorsal fin length should be diagnostic: extends much farther back on carp than on redhorse, almost to caudal peduncle. I suppose buffalo or carpsuckers could add to the confusion: they have a long dorsal like carp.

here is a Redhorse Sucker not sure what species... It was caught and released on the Jackson River near Natural Well.

It may be a Black Redhorse Sucker Moxostoma duquesnei but that's just a guess....

Uh, Woolybugger...what makes you think that is a Moxostoma and not a White Sucker?
