I just saw a video confirming the continued existence of a spotted gar I acquired back in 1989. It is in a 1/2 acre pond in my parents back yard. When originally acquired it was already about 12" long so my guess it was already a couple years old at least. I think it is at least 2014-1989+2=27 years old.

How old does a spotted gar have to be to be considered really old.

I went to Wikipedia (which we all know if all fact~). It says the average life-span is 8-10 years. Max reported is 18 years.

Doing a quick search I found that the Minnesota record for oldest longnose gar is 32. So I would say your spotted friend is certainly relatively old. Very cool.

My nephew thinks it is about 36" now. Video was not made to make good estimate of length. Over 4th July I will try to seine up for accurate assessment of length and weight. There may also be a single male bowfin that has been in the same pond for about 20 years. It was a good 5 lbs when put it. Every year it digs a big nest near dock.

That's really cool. When it does finally gulp its last breath, you need to make sure somebody gets it into a freezer quickly. If gar have countable rings, it would be great to find out its exact age. Same with the bowfin. Do you think you can convince your parents to do daily wellness checks?

Parents will not be able to do wellness checks. Pond is not watched closely enough.
