I just posted the expanded version of my Blue Sucker article from the January 2015 AC. It's got more info, more photos, a full bibliography, links to source texts online, and downloads of the sucker sections of some old books and articles.
For example, here's Kirtland's 1845 illustration showing White Sucker, Smallmouth Buffalo and Blue Sucker:

You're right about the pectorals' shape. It reminds me of the futuristic aircraft on the covers of 1930s pulp novel covers.
