You are right... no, it will not work.

I was afraid of that. I may just have to set up a separate tank for those blackbands. Perhaps with some darters?

I need those bluehead (edited) chubs for my sunny, or some madtoms. I have enough single inhabitant tanks in my house. I'm gonna have to twist the arm of some native guides in my area to take me on a collecting trip! :-k

Yes, you could house some swamp darters in with some blackbanded sunfish. And maybe even something like tail light shiners would work in there.

How far west are you in North Carolina? I might could take you to a couple of places in North Georgia where we get bluehead chubs (Nocomis leptocephalus).

I'm in Charlotte. I have posted a plea in my local fish club forum for a native collecting trip. We've got 2 native guru's in the club, but in the Raleigh area (3 hours from Charlotte). Soooooooo, it looks like it would be a 3 hour trip either way - N. GA or Raleigh. If I knew more about the chubs and how to find/collect them, I could go exploring in some nearby waters. One of the guru's told me they are around here and relatively easy to collect. Problem is - easy for them. For a novice like me? Well, not so much. :lol:

Pictus cats and redtail sharks MIGHT be OK with your redbreast. Just make sure you have time to sit and watch for 20 min or so when you try it. It'll work better if the cats and shark are settled in the tank first, THEN add sunnie.

Small sunfishes (blackbanded, bluespotted) and darters will NOT work with redbreast. Even if she doesn't deliberately kill them, they'll never get enough food. Fast shiners, chubs, rosyside dace, catfish are better bets. I'm emailing you a table of NC stream fish in Charlotte and surrounding counties.

Get Fritz Rohde's new Freshwater Fishes of South Carolina - it has photos and info on all the species found near Charlotte.

I have hosted collecting trips for CAAS on a couple of occasions though there has been little interest of late, or I haven't been contacted at least.

If you are willing to drive the hour or so south to Columbia, I would be glad to help you get whatever fish you want. Send me a list of species and I can work out a plan.

How nice to see both of you here! Yes, I'm the same "twohuskies" from CAAS. Dustin, I've posted on the CAAS thread, and am ready, willing, and excited to drive to Columbia to get in on your next collecting trip. VERY excited about getting those chubs... :biggrin:

Gerald, thanks for your suggestions too. Unfortunately, the fish I wanted to move around to leave the pictus cats and rainbow shark didn't work out. So, not going to even have to try to make them work with the redbreast. I think if I can get the chubs, I'll be content with my true native tank.

But, would love to start a smaller tank with the blackbanded and perhaps some darters or shiners. Now, we just need to go on a collecting trip! ;-)

For the 55 with the redbreast, we can get:

Rosyside dace
Greenfin shiner
Margined madtom
Bluehead chub

This would make a nice biotope aquarium.

With the smaller tank, I would suggest you either go with:

a) Yellowfin shiner, or other small shiner
Seagreen darter, or other small darter

or

b) Bluespotted and/or blackbanded sunfish
Lined topminnow
Speckled madtom
Eastern mudminnow
and/or other appropriate swampy inhabitant

We can do trips to get all of these. The fish to go with the redbreast, we can get about halfway between us on I-77.
