Bluegill can be found everywhere in the contiguous united states, but does anyone know were they originate?

The native range goes from the Rio Grande drainage north to the Great Lakes, and from the Rockies east to the Atlantic, except for the northern Atlantic slope. It was a very wide-ranging fish even before humans started moving it around.

Some introduced populations may be derived from particular source populations. This is important when considering at least three types of "bluegill" with different natural distributions can be distinguished based on appearance alone. You do not have use scale, spine and / or ray counts to do it; just colors and general appearance. Its like a trip to the candy store seeing the different types of bluegill all together and alive.

What are the three? I've only heard of coppernose and "northern".

Do you have images of the types to make it easier to ID them?

I think he is probably referring to the "hand paint" variation... if I remember right he talked about them before, but I cannot remember where they occurred.
