We are trying to spawn golden shiners as part of a project with some high school students. Does this species show any sexual dimorphism that could allow us to separrate pairs or groups? Any other suggestions about spawning Notemigonus?

Thank you,

I believe only nuptial males will develop an orangish-red color on the anal and pelvic fins, in addition to tubercles on the head and some really small ones on all fin rays. Females might show the orangish-red to a lesser degree, but it should be discernible in combination with presence/lack of tubercles. Females will also outgrow males. Of course, in order to get these attributes you need to be able to spawn them (I'm no help there)....
