It is posted in the section "Darters and Perches", and Perca just aren't that different in their wide distribution.

I thought it was hooked for a moment, but don't see line. Although something appears to be on it back - between the spiny and the soft dorsal fins. Something is bothering it - not any sort of courtship display or anything.

I agree, looks like a water bug of some sort. Fish seems like trying to reach back and bite it.

That looks like it's a part of the fin. My guess is that it was showing some territorial aggression and it might have smacked itself a little too hard in the process.

I thought at first maybe it was trying to spar with its reflection in the camera lens, but that wouldn't really make sense with conspecifics all around, and it definitely looks like a Belastomatid is snacking on it. I'd be irritated too and probably pull some similar maneuvers.
