Erica, your experiences were not with backyard dirt.
Geek, I would like to hear more about your adverse experience, as I have never had anything but good luck with dirt, but to be honest that may be because of the wonderful red Georgia clay.

Yeah I know how you feel. I once got a bag of soil from a store that did the same thing and was a complete nightmare. Avoid Miracle Gro Organic Choice Potting Mix (and anything with composted bark as an ingredient; it floats).
That was most likely the reason for that huge dirt cloud. I was using Miracle Gro.
The 20 gallon that I do have works great! For some reason I didn't have any huge dirt clouds explode into the water column. I agree that it does work extremely well!

Thanks, I did not know that Miracle Gro was the wrong choice. Everyone else over the whole internet is recommending Miracle Gro so that is what I went with.
