Erica, your experiences were not with backyard dirt.

Geek, I would like to hear more about your adverse experience, as I have never had anything but good luck with dirt, but to be honest that may be because of the wonderful red Georgia clay.

Yeah I know how you feel. I once got a bag of soil from a store that did the same thing and was a complete nightmare. Avoid Miracle Gro Organic Choice Potting Mix (and anything with composted bark as an ingredient; it floats).

That was most likely the reason for that huge dirt cloud. I was using Miracle Gro.

The 20 gallon that I do have works great! For some reason I didn't have any huge dirt clouds explode into the water column. I agree that it does work extremely well!

OK, once more for the whole class...

Dirt is Good

Miracle Grow is not Dirt

therefore...

Miracle Grow is not Good

Thanks, I did not know that Miracle Gro was the wrong choice. Everyone else over the whole internet is recommending Miracle Gro so that is what I went with.

Look at that, we learned that Miracle Grow is not as good as backyard dirt, and that we cant alwyas rely on the internet... a great day for education

Just got the shipping quote for 8 Rainbow Darters. I need to save up some more $$$$ before diving into the world of natives.

Yep... it's not cheap to ship fish fast enough to be reasonably sure they'll survive the trip, for sure.
