The first talk was based on his research comparing growth rates in southern verses northern populations of spotted gar. Since the northern "peripheral" population has a much shorter growing season, they demonstrated that the young of the year are able to put on weight much faster to survive the winter compared to the southern populations.
It turns out that his research was partly funded by NANFA - here's a link to the forum post with the announcement:

Way to go NANFA! I'm hopeful that Solomon will do a write-up for American Currents before too long.
Solomon is currently a postdoctoral research associate at the Shedd Aquarium. He has a website on primitive fish at http://primitivefishes.com/ He's also on facebook at http://www.facebook....rimitiveFishes
Please feel free to reach out to him - I'm sure he'd be happy to hear from you!

It turns out that I can make a recommendation for them - they're a sponsor of our local aquarium society - NJAS.Sorry, but I don't know anything else about the vendor so please don't take this as a recommendation.
It's Aquascape Online located in Belleville NJ. Website is http://aquascapeonline.com/
The brick and mortar shop is Aquarium Paradise, 234 Washington Avenue Belleville NJ 07109 (908) 634-0820

I hopes he does too... it is actually one of the only things that we request grant recipients do... and they have not always been very good about doing it... this has been a problem that we have had... kind of sad that you can give people a grant, and not get a simple article out of them reporting their outcomes.
Maybe the grant committee can contact him via that website and follow up with him?

Without meaning to make too much extra work for anyone, but I'd really enjoy a "where are they now" type follow up on some more of those past grant recipients.[/size]

During Solomon's talk, he recounted that they would all too often come across piles of dead gar on the banks. Apparently, at one time, some state fishing regulations actually required that gar be killed and not returned to the water. He's trying to get the word out that they're now in need of conservation.... they're considered trash fish up here, ...
Anyway, making the best of the situation, they would sometimes take measurements of the discarded fish and sample the ear bones (otoliths?) for age. On one occastion, while driving, they spotted a dead gar on the road in the opposing lane. Before they could pull over to turn around, the following vehicle swerved over the line apparently just to run over the thing and make sure it stayed dead.
I wonder if some of this explains the "extirpated in New Jersey" status.
