Last week two friends and I made the trek from IL and MI to VA and NC for some hardcore microfishing. Huge thanks to Gerald for helping out with trip planning and Derek for going through fish IDs afterward. Most of these fish were new to me, so if you see any IDs that look wrong, please let me know!

Great group of fish, not sure if your separating subspecies but the Banded Killifish would be the Eastern Banded Killifish Fundulus diaphanus diaphanus, back in Illinois there Western Banded Killifish Fundulus diaphanus menona.

That's an impressive assemblage for hook and line.

That's awesome Ben. I don't think that is a sawfin shiner, maybe a bigeye chub.

Can't see a barbel for the hook.

One of the guys took some good photo tank shots of a sawfin shiner from that spot, but now I'm not sure that it was the same fish as above. Thanks guys, I'll have to look into it.

Very awesome Ben. You are proving that microfishing is a very viable, and fun way of sampling.

"comely shiner, Fort bragg" - that might be a Cyprinella, either C. nivea (whitefin) or C. sp.cf. zanema (thinlip) - Fritz should know.
"saffron shiner, New River" - to me that looks more like a redlip shiner, N. chiliticus. Both spp are in the New River (probably exotic).
bluehead vs bull chub -- the tubercled one (Dan) is certainly a bluehead, but what characteristics are you using to ID the non-tubercled (Eno) chub? I have trouble ID-ing those, without tubercles. Sorry i couldnt get away to join you -- looks like you had a great time. GBP

I'm not sure I have ever disagreed with Gerald on NC fish but I agree with Ben that the saffron is a saffron.

Gerald, do head closeups help with the chubs? We were calling the ones with more slender heads bull chubs. Our ID skills didn't go beyond that.

What is the taxonomic name of the 'flier'?
