Things have come up and I am not certain if I will make Broken Bow this year. I knew I had a few expenses to do before then (in May I need to get my car inspected and registered. would need to replace brakes and fix dents before inspection). I knew this and planned for it. But sunday something more expensive happened, my transmission died. Now I am not sure if I can afford broken bow.

Hi to all, I'm a graduate student at the University of Arkansas at Pine Bluff. Another graduate student and I are trying to get our professor to let us go to the NANFA convention in Broken Bow this summer. Neither of us have ever been to a NANFA convention before. I was wondering if someone could give me a rundown of  what goes on at these conventions ( my professor wants to know)? Are there many students that attend these conventions? Thanks.

I will let someone else give you a good rundown. But yes there are students, Pro's, academics, aquarists, amateur naturalists, anglers, breeders of native fish, curators of fish collections, authors. It all varies from year to year, and where the convention is held. I do not think you will leave without learning something, making contact with like minded individuals, and generally enjoying yourself. All conventions are different as the hosts are volunteers, and come from all walks of life.

As a student I got my university to pay for me to go several times and still usually get the university I work at now to pay for me to attend. You should be able to do the same and if you want me to talk with your professor let me know... Also are you doing any research projects currently? Might still be some room for a presentation, if you present there is an even better chance the school will pay for you to go.

Well, we have one day of presentations usually in the category that you would hear at state AFS meetings. That evening will be a "banquet" followed by an awesome presentation on fish collecting in Peru and then an auction. Lots of great fellowship with like-minded people.

Sat and Sun are field trips to collect, photograph, perhaps keep the local fishes.  Most of us catch and release. It's a great opportunity to learn the fishes of SE OK.  The number of students attending varies and we hope many come but rates will be reduced for them.

As far as the registration cost, we're still discussing that but for full registration figure around $85 which will include the banquet meal. We hope to get something more definitive out soon.

Are there any presentation slots still looking to be filled? If so, the powers that be here at our park district have encouraged my supervisor and I to offer to present something on our mobile fish exhibit program.

trolling the internet saw a story about a huge gar from broken bow lake, actually probably caught in texas, but just the same suspect lake probably has some notable gar

Yeah, the big alligator gar pic is a hoax.  Lot's of longnose and spotted, but no gator gar in Broken Bow Lake.

Josh- if your offer to present is still good, we've got room for one more.  I'll go ahead and put you down, will a :20 slot work for you?

Julie at the Beavers Bend State Park reports that there are still two cabins available for the convention dates.
