You can still add a little soil to potted plants, then bury the pot in the sand/gravel and lay some flat rocks covering the pot around the plant so the fish cant dig it out.

Nah, I can't stand pots in the tank.  Don't know why, it just bugs me.  But if I can keep my cichlids from digging, I can do the same with the sunfish :)

Several other threads have discussed the merits of Walmart's Special Kitty cat litter. Being baked chunks, it settles into something denser than normal soil and withstands digging fish better. I keep Enneacanthus sunfish in it. It does cloud the water initially, especially since it will hold a significant amount of air following first wetting, which makes it much less dense at first. Erica posted a fairly detailed analysis showing its nutrient properties to be essentially the same as soil.
