title says it all, I'm looking for collecting locations for small fish and invertebrates, plants would be nice too.

45 minutes to the east is Morehead City, where you will find many brackish and amphidromous species. Lately we have been finding tons of spinycheek and fat sleepers, as well as lyre gobies. The cold weather really slows down the marine fishes though.

Croatan Forest also has lined topiminnow (Fundulus lineolatus), but oddly there's no Elassoma records there. You might want to pick up Edward Menhinick's key to Freshwater Fishes of NC. I think the Nat Sci Museum in Raleigh sells it cheaper than you can get it online. For brackish & saltwater ID, Scott's NCfishes website is the best thing going.
