Beautiful area with lots of small creeks and wadable rivers. I tried the South Fork of the New River as well as a few creeks. I couldn't locate any Kanawha Darters, which I was going after, but caught some interesting fish, including at least 25 Mottled Sculpins of all sizes. I was also going after New River Shiners which I hope I found. New+River+_1_.JPG

Guesses largely based on range:

1) Nocomis chub, should be bluehead or bigmouth based on range, but river chub may be introduced there too.

2) Appalachia darter should be the only Percina in the New basin.

3)  Warpaint shiner

4) Cyprinella, should be spotfin (native) but whitetail and possibly others could be introduced there.

5)  Mtn redbelly dace

6)  Pimephales i think, should be bluntnose minnow

7) Redlip shiner

8) Bluntnose minnow?

9-11) could be Tennessee, Silver, Warpaint, Rosyface shiners ...?  cant see enough detail.

12-13) Tennessee shiners

Thanks Gerald, I completely forgot about the Appalachia Darter when I went up there. I did see some red on the shiners that you said may be Rosyface Shiners, I will see if I have some clearer pictures.

Gerald, hopefully these are a little better. I see red on their heads, so maybe Rosyface or TN?Shiner+_2_.JPG
