Stephen - thanks for the ID info. After some research I now understand some of the visual differences between the chain pipefish and the gulf pipefish (length of snout & number of bars), but how do you tell the difference between northern and southern puffer? Is it just range or are there visual differences? Thanks.

Great thread. I've spent some time around Folly Beach, SC and have always wondered what lurked nearby. It would be interesting to grow some of these out in a huge tank. I love native salties.
We found most of the saltwater fish on Sullivan's Island Beach, near the rocks. The Permit and Puffers were all mixed in with clusters of seaweed.

You should head back towards the end of summer, and you should be able to net up some cool, sub-tropical species.....angels, tangs, squirrelfish, butterflies, and a few other Caribbean-goers. Former co-workers of mine used to get them up in Long Island, NY.

Sounds good, thanks for the tip!

10 - mullet - 2 dorsal fins
11 - Fl pompano
12 - southern kingfish
13 - Atl silverside
16 - I have no idea. Fins are too far back to be a ladyfish
19 - black drum
20 - naked goby
25 - permit - red pelvic fins
27 - hard to tell from that angle but maybe a northern or possibly a bandtail puffer
28 - planehead filefish
30 - chain pipefish
and striped burr fish

10 really a mullet? Looks completely different as larval I guess. The initial quick ID here at my office was leatherjacket but I see the two dorsal fins now. Also makes sense if they were caught in mass quantities10 - mullet - 2 dorsal fins
