Ok long story short in my debated koi and goldfish and sunny tank, I got velvet. I feal really dumb getting such a preventable disease. I though I didn't need to quarantine. Grrr, I can't believe I did this. So I found that formalin cures velvet, we hope and because of the nature of the disease I have to treat the whole tank. Will the sunnies be able to handle the meds? What are my options because of the sunfish. As of know I am about to run to the store and get some meds with formalin, but would the sunnies be able to handle them?

Ok I also found a medication called velvet guard. It has no formalin, just heavy metals etc. Woudl that be better?

Oodinium is known to respond to formalin - I don't know about that other stuff. I've not heard of sunnies being particularly sensitive to formalin.

I ended up getting maracyn (sp) anyway whose brand of products. It has melaline, or makite, (not sure which) green and another active ingredient.

Hi,
Sunfish do not react well to any dyes in their water so I would avoid anything that can discolor the water (Not sure on spelling but Menthelyne blue, malacite green etc). Good luck!

That's methylene blue and malachite green.

OK - no formalin, no malachite green...

Oh well, I guess they're just gonna die.

Uh oh. My med has M. green in it. It also stained the hard wood nicely.... Its kinda weak though. My sunfish seam not to have had a problem with it yet...

I don't want to stop treatment, since that would cause resistance etc. Do you think they will be ok with some green in there?

Honestly, I've never heard of sunnies being particularly sensitive to malachite green. A formalin/malachite combination would be better, but hey - since you've already started treatment, let's see how it pans out.

Be aware that velvet can pop back up after it is apparently cured - the organism can live in fish's intestines. So you may need to retreat in the near future.
