Hello to all,
I have been reading a lot of literature about sunfishes, and have been scanning through images as well. I still cannot find a sunfish that resembles the fish I caught as a kid in southern WV. Everybody calls them sunperch. They are yellow with like a turquoise blue spot on their side. Any insight on this will be greatly appreciated. I plan on collecting a few this coming late spring.

Take pictures after you collect some and all your questions will be answered.

I agree pictures are best for sunfish id's. Although I would say Pumpkinseed is unlikely in WV due to natural range but that often does not mean much with sunfish they get moved around a lot.
