At what size do they develope the golden color? I purchased some at a bait shop(trying to find fatheads) and they were all silver with clear fins. The biggest is 3".
In my experience they will go into and out of the gold color. The smaller ones I had, none bigger than 3 inches would be a nice shiny gold color around normal feeding time and/or in the evening when the lights had been on for a bit. They were always "tranluscent" with a dark lateral line (vertebrate) in the mornings and looked more line the common bait shop shiners sold around here.

Well, at this size, I think they could be emerald shiners. YOY GS and ES both look the same to me.
