Ya, bowfishing does nothing to the carp population. I have heard rumors that bowfishing tournaments can sway the DNR from doing chemical kills. (Which one is worse?)

Bowfishing is just fun.

You have a handful of folks following the NANFA code. Then you have state governments, hatcheries, and industry undermining you at every step....salmon, stealhead, trout, carps, lamprey, alewive, gobies, zebra mussles, and etc.....

Uphill battle...

Certainly there has to be some secret faction of NANFA out there killing carp for the sake of natives. After all....someone on this post wanted that carp dead....and I quote, "PLEASE TELL ME YOU KILLED THAT."

It was me. The carp in certain places here are the ONLY fish you find where there used to be tons of other fish.

I seine a fair amount of water and you can be rest assured that when legal, invasive fishes and cayfishes don't stand a chance making it out of my nets alive. I think this is the norm with this group and not a secret faction. At the same time I really don't think I'm having an impact on invasive critters with my actions.

I appreciate your honesty. Not many would say that. Perhaps you could use your "kills" for food. Crayfish tail is a delicacy for medium to large fish.

There is a group called CAG that is very pro-carp. They really dislike bowfishing and are trying to have it banned. Granted, some of their arguments are valid, but in general, carp have been so detrimental to our native species. I tend to favor bowfishing and at least controlling the spread and population of these fish....

I only kill about about a dozen a year. Basically, I am just taking what I need......fertilizer, fish food, and bait.

Okay - a few more questions for everyone, some are pretty newb-ish but please bear with me....

Can the bass be overfed or is it self-regulating? I raise African cichlids and they have to be managed as they will eat and eat until they are fat and unhealthy. They simply are going by their natural instincts to constantly eat since their food sources are not real high in nutrition.
I noticed that the bass had finished off the last two or three mbuna I had in the tank with him - and its belly is bulging (which will come up more in my next question) and I offered up an earthworm and it didn't take any interest in the worm.

Since the bass' belly is so full - should I wait a day to feed it again? I don't want the fish to get fat if its gonna affect its health.

Are bass sexable/ventable? If so - is there anyone that would have a link to vent pictures?

If I remember correctly, females will grow larger than males - is this true?

You should feed the bass a shrimp or two every other day. Then occasionally throw in some other foods.
Since it ate three cichlids, I'm guessing it's not hungry, so wait a day or two before you feed it again.
You should try getting a nice looking catfish for that tank. Then, you toss in 5 shrimps a day, and don't worry about it spoiling your water since the catfish would clean it up.
In the third picture, what is the fish on the bottom?

Right now - the bass is housed with breeding group of Metriaclima hajomaylandi 'Chizumulu' (African Cichlids). The bass and the mbuna are the same size - and neither species bothers the other (suprisingly). If there's any aggression - its towards the bass (in the form of fin-fanning mostly).

Here's a short video of me feeding the smallmouth an earthworm.

This bass has really became more "personable" and doesn't seem to fear me at all. I gave it a second worm after the video was taken - but offered it in-hand. After a few hesitant jolts - it came in and took it greedily.

Also by getting him used to feeding out of your hand it will rapidly get to the point where he will take anything from you...even cubes and pellets...he will start keying on your movement not the prey..

I really doubt it. In the wild, they relish crayfish, which on a "hardness" standpoint put shrimp to shame. I've even seen them eat baby turtles(or at least, attempt to...don't know what the results of the attempt were)! I don't think they will even notice the tail on your shrimp.

Well, tonight I did go and get some shrimp, bought the pre-cooked "popcorn-size" shrimp. They were peeled and without tails. The bass seemed to like them, and hopefully having shrimp in the diet for a lil while will be awright for it.
