Hi,
I have a number of empty tanks sitting around and I'd like to get either a few dollar sunfish or a few blue spot sunfish and hopefully breed them. They could either go in a 33g or a 55g. How many should I get, and do they like still or flowing water? Also, if I'd like to breed them could I keep some florida flagfish with them or would it be better to set up a species tank.
Looking for any info or recommendations on keeping and breeding them. Also opinions of whether to get blue spots or dollars.
Thanks!
Irene

Put dollars in the 55g with plants and driftwood. Same for the bluespotteds, just put them in the 33. Get a pair of each and they should breed with temps in the high 70's and lots o' food. Www.aquaculturestore.com has pairs of dollars for sale. Probably Easterns. I think they were about $29 for the pair with free shipping. Not a bad deal, IMO. Don't put the flagfish in there. Your fry will disappear quickly.

Ok, thanks! Would they be ok with a bit of current from a canister filter or would a sponge filter be best? Would you recommend getting a pair only as opposed to a trio or group of 4?

If you have just a pair the male will often be pretty hard on the female I would recomend a larger group. I personally keep a group of 6 eastern dollars in a 55, 2 males and 4 femalse with a lot of drift wood and java ferns without any troubles. I think having more females than males helps with aggression problems as well as a lot of cover.

Good to know, would they be Ok with a few darters or would the darters eat the eggs/babies if they breed?
Are the blue spots the same, better kept in a group?
Thanks for the info!

Yeah, the darters will eat what they can.
Generally all fish that don't form strict pairs are better kept in a group for breeding. The bluespots are the same.

I too think most darter species would be pretty good at eating eggs and fry. Also I don't think most darter species would stand much of a chance in with dollar sunfish, they probably would eat the darters unless they were a rather large species. They would live better with bluespotted sunfish but you still have the problem with them eating the eggs if you are trying to breed the sunfish.
