There is a good chance I will have some available in July (I typically sell sunfish for $6 each) next summer but if you can't wait till then you could try looking on aquabid.com or try aquaculturestore.com, although it looks like they are currently sold out as well.

I have a big adult warmouth in a 75 gallon with a chain pike.

I do have a dollar sunfish in a 20 gallon (I found him at the local fish store)

Dollars are nice sunfish but aggressive

I live in california too and can green sunfish if you want try one or two of those. If your close I may be able to send you one cheep. I have some and they eat flake food and any bug I put in with them. They are funny to watch too. Not the most colorful sunfish but I like them. I would say you could have 2-3 small ones to start if you want but you will have to move them out as they grow. If you had a 30 gal it would be better. PM me if you are interested in a Green.

I once had a grass pickerel try to eat a green sunfish; they were about the same relative sizes as your two fish (5" pickerel, 3" sunfish). Of course, the pickerel choked on the sunfish, so he at least got his revenge.

It also helped that the warmouth was long established in the tank before the pickerel arrived

Rock bass can be aggressive.

I catch warmouth on a regular basis and I've never seen one bigger than 3" or so. It's possible there is subspecies that lives here that doesn't grow to 12" Fritz Rhode would know for sure if he is monitering this thread. I can't seem to find his book to make sure.

yours are just stunted, get a YOUNG one, put it in it's own pond filled with leaches and minnows and it will easilly get 8+"


If you have a source of stunted fish: I currently have 2 greens that are about 3.5-4" They were about 1.5-2" when I got them early last spring. they eat like pigs and I am beginning to wonder if they are permenantly stunted (no fish in the pond I got them out of was over 2"). They are alone in a 40 gallon tank, I would assume they will likely never reach above 6 inches?

Not a subspecies. Are they in a pond? If so, they've likely overpopulated to the point were low food supply, crowded conditions, and less than adequate water quality have stunted them. If you get a young one, say .5"-2", it shouldn't be "permanently" stunted. If given good water quality, space, and food, it should grow to full size. Even a subspecies wouldn't be THAT much smaller than average.
Are you positive you have warmouth? Bantams can look sort of like warmouth, and they average about 3".

Something along this line I have seen with wild caught fishes in particular. Some individuals appear incapable of rapid growth after introduction to a confined envorinment. Never get a good appettite and do not convert well what they do consume. In at least a few instances I have suspected the parasite load they carried was involved. Really had some fun with this when mixing animals from very different collection localities. I think they were swaping parasites.

Wow talking about stunted fishes again? Its a little creepier when someone suggested that you can put stunted fishes in smaller tanks.....

The stunted fishes doesn't mean they are subspecies just because of its sizeness but it must be different genetically in different populations.

I seen stunted northern pike, yellow perch, black bullhead, guppies, crappies and sunnies but are they subspecies? No, its just not right conditions of the lakes for them to be in. A healthiest fish can reached their maximiun size in right conditions.
