I only have one other sunfish and it is a small juvenile redbreast.

My warmouth does get active when it thinks I am going to throw cichild pellets into the tank

Ok, its a dude. Spangling intensity way outside of range for chick warmouth. Gonna breed it or just trying to give name of appropriate gender?

Can you get some three to four warmouth from same or similar location? You be looking for drab warmouth now.

I merged the two topics since they're both photos of the same warmouth.

Thanks Teleost.

I really doubt it.

I was very surprised we caught this one and I have had it since late 2006?

I wish I could say I could go back and get a female but I really doubt it.

Warmouth are rare where I live in the mountains.

I could try out of the same pond but all the other fish I catch are bluegills and redears.

Maybe waiting till spring is to be. Otherwise get females from other location or even use female green sunfish (Rearing techniques for hybrids and their ultimate legal fate is the same).

I could/can get a green easy.

I was going to wait until spring to breed my warmouth anyway. Then it would be warmer and easier to keep the fry alive.

I just wanted to know what sex it was to get ready if I did indeed embark upon that idea.

Warmouth/green hybrids seem interesting.

The hybrid (green mother x warmouth father) is quite hardy and based on literature and my experience actually sterile. Your 75 gallon tank is overkill for a breeder but I would still recommend going for quality early (day 1) by attempting to raise only 50 or so of the thousands you start with. If brine shrimp used you need not wait till warmer weather.

So I can use brine shrimp to feed the fry?

Yes, I have been initiating batches, harvesting and feeding out the critters all day to a bunch greedy thankless little bluegill all day and ready to go home. Keys to success are feed them early, frequently what they can consume in 15 minutes, with the freshly hatched stuff. If growing well you can start training them to consume a manufactured diet by day 14 for sure. Even the picky little bantams, bluespotted and banded sunfishes can use at swimup if brine shrimp properly handled.

Don't ask why or what I see, but I see a male. Not 100% sure, but it just looks that way.

Whoops, where did those replies come from?

Feeding the fry. Bbs sure. Microworms and green water for the newest phase. Graduate up to grindal worms, but keep on with the bbs and microworms. If you are not too worried about what is going on with the fry keep on pumping in green water so that the tank/container water is so discolored you cannot see the fry. A bit of java moss or cotton like algae with some ramshorn or pond snails seem to do the trick.

The thing is that worms and bbs die off soon enough. The green water and fresh hatched snails are always available and provide constant food when you are not there.
