How do you tell if a warmouth is male or female? Thanks

Check for a red spot where the rear of the dorsal meets the body. It will be an obvious spot. From what I can tell, yours is female.

I'm assuming you didn't buy her flowers on Thursday... so if she was pissed that you forgot valentine's day, she a female... if he is still looking at you waiting for that beer can aquarium decoration, its a male.

I think the fish you have is big enough to determine sex based on coloration. Look at the warmouth from the opposite aspect. Head away from you and tail towards you at 45 degree angle. Look at base / meaty part of dorsal fin with rays. Males will have an orange to red marking / spot while females may have a at most a light spot but usually no marking. Marking is kind of like dorsal spot on bantam sunfish or bluegill but more into the meat. Males also tend to exhibit from the same apsect whitish to yellowish spots on thier flanks they show to females when trying to lead them to nest. Otherwise look at thread on Vent Sexing green sunfish as primary sexual characters the same.

I'm not seeing any red spot so I will assume it's a female.

Handling the fish, holding it ventral side up to view reproductive openings, and possibly squeezing fish in a manner to expell gametes (eggs / sperm) while holding it in good light. Care must be taken to make event not too stressfull.

Do you have any known females of another sunfish species, preferably green? Can you isolate the warmouth in question? If yes for both , then it can be used as a teaser and I can will give details on how to test.

SHould work so long as chain pickerel does not intimidate warmouth. Any other sunfishes in tank?

Excellent!
1) Do you have any known females of any sunfish species? Warmouth best, green sunfish second best and all other within Lepomis a distant third. If no, then gotta get one or two.
2) Do you have your warmouth conditioned to come to the front of the tank when you approach with food?
