A friend from another site asked me if I knew what this was, but i don't. It's a darter from the Ashboro, NC area. It looks to me to be in spawning color, maybe?
Anyway, can you guys identify it?
( Sorry about the unfortunate name she gave the file. )
Thanks!

From that pic I would call it a tessellated darter.

I'll second the tesselated choice based on the picture.

Yeah, the males get black and sooty like that when they are breeding. Otherwise they are mostly amber with dark tracings.

I don't usually chime in on fish id questions but that doesn't look like the tesselated darters we have around here.
The head shape seems wrong [I just ran downstairs and looked at my big male from above for comparison]. Also the black color is more widespread, especially the whole head. Even at rest when not charged up my male's entire head is very dark colored.
Maybe regional differences?

It had lightened up a tad before Dustin was able to grab a pic.

Okay, Tessellated. Sounds good to me. Thanks, everyone!

By the way, I think my Browns ( E. edwini ) may have spawned. They were ripe when collected, but I didn't think they would spawn in their current conditions. They have been digging/rooting up the substrate like crazy all of a sudden until now the whole tank is a cloudy mess. I thought I saw a sliver of something fry-like zoom by at one point, but I just can't tell. I'm not a darter guy, so I don't know what to expect from them. Don't most darters deposit their eggs under a rock or something?

In other news, my Tanichthys micagemmae have been spawning quite nicely, and now I need to set up another tank just for all these fry. :)

Anway, I'll pass on the info to the girl who wanted to know. Thanks again!
