What is the best item to transport the fish you've caught....is there a thread about this already?

If you want info on the forum, look in the shipping and transporting fish forum. If don't see a topic that addresses your questions, start a new one

I use a THICK walled styro cooler. Those plastic jobs just don't do it. You can get these coolers from Veterinarians, but Wal-mart sells one for about 7 bucks that does the trick.

I'm not sure it is the best way, but what has worked well for me is to transport the fish in 5 quart ice cream pails. I place these in a large cooler along with a milk jug full of ice. I keep the ice contained to minimize direct contact between the ice and the buckets. I want the ice cooling the air in the cooler not the water in the buckets. This way the water pretty much stays the same temperature and won't heat or cold stress the fish. I also make sure to change out the water in the buckets with fresh stream/lake whatever water, right before putting them into the cooler. That way they go into the cooler in essentially the conditions they were living in. This method has worked well for me even on trips to multiple sites, when I've had fish from the earlier sites in the car parked in the sun for a couple hours while sampling the later sites.
