Does anyone know if Flagfin Shiners absolutely require a cooling period in order to spawn or can they be conditioned to spawn by feeding them up on live foods without a cooling period? Thanks.

I know people who insist that running the photo-period through a seasonal sequence is enough to get most southern fish to breed.

I would try a few weeks of good food, low light, and 65F.
Then ramp up to 14 hours of light per day and 72F.
Have an egg-saver and a little Java moss in the tank with gentle current.

Sounds like a plan. Thanks.

So how well did this work out?

It probably worked fine. I've raised a lot of Flagfins, and that's a pretty much tried & true recipe for success. The only thing I would have done differently would be to add a 15% water change, with distilled or rainwater, when the water hit 73F. That always gets them going.
