hi im looking for golden shiners,i want the big ones if you guys have any info on where to find in the ice season or off season would be good thanks.i live in central ma.also looking for fallfish.

I live in the Southeast coast and never had much luck catching them in thr winter.

yea they would have to be jigged up.what about in spring where do you go if you dont mind .thanks

If the ice gets safe I can show you a few spots in NH where you can get both. one is a small pond connected to the ashuelot river (the result of the rivers course being changed artificially) where a river channel was diverted that is rich in perch and pickeral and I catch fallfish over a foot long their through the ice.

The other is a setback on the connecticut river where spikes on a small jig or a tiny hook can get 4-6 inch golden shiner if your lucky (and panfish otherwise).

come spring getting these species gets easier, especially the smaller fallfish.

no, I am in the southwest corner close to keene and mass.

They are pretty commonly sold as bait fish at tackleshops.

yea the arkansa shiners.the pond shiners around here are alot more gold.thanks

Probably in january or such as the ice is just forming now and isn't safe yet. As for how far it is from my house one is about ten minutes and the other is about 25 minutes.

You'd need to drive slightly further to get a license. We may have to try the connecticut first and work our way to winchester as it is close to a walmart where you can get a license.

I do warn you however that the fallfish I get through the ice tend to be BIG.

Also, if I am lucky, I can get a crappie in the connecticut.

An intersting thing I've noticed among Ma anglers is their belief in minnows not found in books. Small shiners are called "golden", extra large are "pond" shiners and breeding males "redfin" shiners. Many would argue if informed they're all the same fish.

yes i do fish and im sure alot of guys do.for my use of the shiners is what i want to use them for.not trying to turn this into a fishing thread i am in the process of building a pond to raise them.also dont forget when i trapped them and found those mud minnows .you saw the thread on a fishing site that i had them and you contacted me to get them and i did.so the way i look at it is i helped you with something you wanted so why cant i get some info.this is what you guys do so you seem to be the right people to ask.golden shiners or pond,or red fin as you would say which i dont argue fascinate me.i always wanted a pond for small fish and these seem to be the ones i want.so any info you guys could help me with would be good cause im just learning how to chase all these little fish and the thrill has gone more beyond fishing.so thank you guys for the info .plus if i get any fish that i have no idea what they are which will happen and you guys want them or location i will be more then glad to lead you there.thanks chad

Sort of like how in NH people think punmpkinseed and redbreast sunfish are the same species, a bit of ignorance i am planning on using to get a new state record fish next year.

However the use of a board to get out past the thin shore ice was something i was nervous on. I caught a bluegill (was trying on a crappie for my tank) so it may be time to catch the fish soon. (I have all this week off, and every weekend after unless something comes up).

minnow i just messaged you. i know a post where you can catch about 70 in an hour. all mammoths like the pics i posted in my fishing thread....my fallfish spot in 10 min from my shiner spot. and of course its right in central mass

ok i hit him back havent heard anything yet i trapped a bunch of smaller ones in a 2 day soak.i have smaller ones around 1 1/2 ill give up .or im just gunna put them back in pond.

I was just joshin ya about the angling thread. I'm one of the worst offenders for posting angling pics here. My POV is as a fish geek from all angles, I can't sperate angling from aquariums etc.

PS The mods have been tolerant of the occaisonal angling thread, especially if there's a few good pics.
