Being lucky enough to have these, I want to be able to breed them. From what I've read, these fish spawn in chub nests in the wild.
When I find them in spawning colors, they are always with creek chub.
I've also read that they will spawn over gravel in captivity.
I almost always catch them over gravel so this makes sense.
My light cycle is pretty short at 8 hrs of light/day and water temperature is ~60F. It will be hard to get the temperature any lower in my basement without opening the doors at night which I don't want to do.
They exhibited a lot of courtship behavior, possible spawning, in my 135 gallon community tank that hovered between 70F-74F. Never colder than that.
As it was a community tank with all manner of other fishes, I was never able to find eggs or fry.

Having had males outnumber my females, I wasn't very successful. I'm hoping to grab a few more females this winter.
The new plan is to separate the genders and then introduce them in an outdoor tub when the temperature is right.
You catch them over gravel? You must be finding them in the spring/summer.

We saw MRBD at the convention this year and on a chub nest with the roseyside dace and the local Hydrophlox Notropis (can't remember th ename right now)... anyway, the builder/owner of the chub nest and a few of his ladies were hanging around and was obviously a bluehead chub. We did not collect any off of the spawning nest, but it was a colorful site to behold.
When I find them in spawning colors, they are always with creek chub.
