Lately I've noticed quite a few cardinal shiners with small black spots on their fins. I've not collected any to examine the spots up close, but they look very similar to the glochidia sometimes seen attached to the fins and gills of green sunfish and other similar species.

Do glochidia sometimes attach to shiners? If not, does anyone have any ideas what they might be?

Your fish most likely have black spot disease, caused by a trematode (it is an asymptomatic disease, so don't panic!). The black spots are actually from the metacercaria stage in the trematode life cycle that are waiting to get ingested by their definitive host, which is typically a fish eating bird like a heron, kingfisher, etc....
