How to catch wild pickeral?

When I catch them i search the wisconsin river sand bars for pools that have dried up away from the main current then just drag my nets, ALWAYS find them that way.
Make sure you don't keep any of them because--acording to the dnr--they are nonexistint in Wisconsin for some reason, eventhough they are there. Also, because of VHS you have to have a special permit to collect fish and it's very hard to get one.

I don't know whether the DNR is actually denying pickerel, but they are not mentioned in the fishing regs whatsoever. They fall into the class of game fish with no open season, thus illegal to keep when caught. It is legal to keep pickerel that were bought from dealers.
There has been some relaxation of the rules on keeping minnows alive when leaving waters, but I am not sure of the exact ramifications for collecting wild fish for keeping.
