Still looks good for me as far as I can tell. I should have reliable transportation by then as well, although if you wouldn't mind packing me in the Drewmobile, I'd gladly carpool and chip in for gas/hotel or whatever.

So far looks good. Need to check with Management, though. I may not be able to escape for both days.

We are about two weeks out now. I think we are going to start from the east and work our way west on Saturday and then the reverse on Sunday leaving us in NC.

I would like to start counting heads to get an idea on numbers. This will allow me to figure out how mobile we can be and setup carpooling.

That sucks Matt. Let me know when you're available and we should go back to that area we stopped at last year.

Derek, of course. I've got plenty of room.

Here's a list of Roanoke Basin freshwater fishes. I started with the NC list, then added the VA ones that dont occur in NC. x = NC native, va = not in NC, e = exotic. So most of the ones marked "X" also occur in VA. About 1/3 of the spp listed are coastal plain fishes (downstream of Kerr Reservoir) that we wont be seeing on the July 11-12 trip.

I can only get away for a day trip, but either day should work. I'm open to suggestions as to which day. Also, I need a VA license, but the NC waters will be covered by a permit -- is that right? Can anyone confirm that the $36 nonresident statewide freshwater license will be sufficient?

If anyone else is in a similar position and wants to share a ride up from the Triangle area, send me a PM.

It is really up to you. It will be my first time in the area so I couldn't tell you which would be "better". If you want an annual fishing VA license, that is the right one. The 5-day one would be sufficient @ $16.00. As of now, I've been told we'll be covered by permit for NC. If that changes, I'll be sure let you guys know.

If either Gerald or I go, then you will be covered under our permits in NC.

I'm planning to come Sunday for the southern half of the trip. If my kids (15 & 7) come with me then we might camp at Hanging Rock St Pk on the Dan River Sat night. If kids opt out then i'm up for carpooling with Mette and/or others. We could meet in Hillsborough, I-85 exit 164, Daniel Boone Village.

Is Hanging Rock State Park a good place to start our Sunday trip? If so, that will give folks an idea of where we'll be on Sunday morning.

What about the park at Danbury? Easy to find, good parking, swimming hole, right on the Dan River.

Which ever works. I'm relying on you NC guys for the more southern locations.

If Mother Nature cooperates for the next week and a half and it doesn't pour, it looks like the water will be perfect for that weekend.

Town Fork Cr near Germanton is the only spot i'm familiar with in Stokes Co, so i will defer to Fritz.
Dan River downstream of Madison is mostly flat and sandy from what ive seen.
Dan tribs Jacobs Cr and House Cr, in central Rockingham Co, have some riffles but I dont recall where (many yrs ago).

The Dan River from Danbury up is relatively easy to work -pools, runs, riffles and wide enough that we won't bump into each other. Proably can also access it where a tributary stream enters.
The reason I suggested the park is that early arrivals can hop into the water. It's a local swimming hole also. Pool should be full of satinfin, crescent, white, and rosefin shiners.

Does anyone know what the chances are of us running across those Redlip shiners? They were my favorite fish of the NC convention and I would love to see/collect some more.

Also, are Red Shiners off limits for collecting? I thought I heard something about this at the convention too, but I don't remember seeing anything about them in the VA regs...

Redlip shiners (chiliticus) are very common in Dan River tribs in Stokes and Rockingham Counties NC. Good chance we'll find lots of them. NC-WRC prohibits possession of LIVE red shiners (lutrensis) because they are invasive, so you can probably remove and KILL as many as you want. But I think the feral lutrensis pops in the Dan basin in NC are farther east, in Caswell and Person Co's.
